Head of Internal Supervisory Unit of Ganesha University, Earns Doctorate Degree in Environmental Science University General

Denpasar, Monday (24/03/2025), the Postgraduate Environmental Science Doctoral Study Program (PDIL) of Udayana University, held a Phase II Final Examination (Open Examination) with Promovendus I Wayan Krisna Eka Putra, S.Pd., M.Eng., which was held in the Hall Room of the Udayana University Postgraduate Building. Krisna, who is a Lecturer of Remote Sensing engineering Technology at Ganesha University of Education and who is also the head of the Internal Supervisory Unit (SPI), successfully defended his dissertation entitled “Development of Vulnerability Index Due to Climate Change and Mitigation Strategies in Coastal Areas”. The doctoral promotion exam was chaired by the Coordinator of PDIL Pasca Unud Prof. I Wayan Arthana, MS, PhD, which consists of eight referees namely, Prof. Ir. I Gusti Bagus Sila Dharma, MT, PhD, Prof. Ir. Ida Ayu Astarini, M.Sc. Ph.D., I Wayan Gede Astawa Karang, S.Si, M.Si, PhD., Prof. Dr. Ir. I Wayan Nuarsa, M.Si., Prof. Dr. Ir. I Wayan Sandi Adnyana, MS., Prof. Dr. Ir. Made Sudiana Mahendra, MAppSc, PhD., Prof. Dr. Ir. I Wayan Suarna, MS., I Gede Hendrawan, S.Si.,M.Si., Ph.D., and Mr. Rahman As-syakur, SP, MSi, PhD., as well as four academic invitees namely, Dr. Pande Gde Sasmita Julyantoro, S.Si., M.Si., Ni Made Utami Dwipayanti, ST., M.BEnv., PhD., Dr. Ni Made Suartini, S.Si., M.Si., and Putu Indra Christiawan, S.Pd., M.Sc., Ph.D.

Krisna, in his presentation, revealed that the objectives of his research are: 1) describe the impact of climate change in the coastal areas of Bali Island; 2) develop and analyze the vulnerability index of the coastal areas of Bali Island due to climate change and determine the determinant indicators that affect the regional vulnerability index; and 3) describe the mitigation strategies that must be carried out by the government to reduce the index of vulnerability of the coastal areas of Bali Island due to climate change. Krisna also added, this study uses the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) research method to analyze and develop indicators of coastal area vulnerability to climate change. The results of this study are (1) the impact of climate change that occurs in coastal areas is the presence of extreme waves and abrasion, including an increase in sea level. The impact is not entirely caused by climate change, but also by physical development in coastal areas; (2) The results of the development of the vulnerability index show significant differences with the CVI and SoVI methods. In general, physical indicators are determinant indicators that trigger high vulnerability indicators; (3) strategies that can be carried out to reduce the level of regional vulnerability through mitigation or adaptation. Mitigation can be carried out by regulating to prevent the development of settlements and physical development in coastal areas, especially on coastal boundaries. While adaptation can be carried out by strengthening the adaptive capacity of communities in coastal areas, Krisna concluded his presentation.

Meanwhile, at the end of the Open Examination, Prof. Ir. I Gusti Bagus Sila Dharma, MT, PhD, as the promoter in his speech congratulated the promovendus, family, and the agency where the promovendus served. Prof. Sila hopes that the knowledge that has been obtained should be able to make his future better, and benefit the wider community, nation, and state so that it can provide its own pride (DK).
